Clematis macropetala 'Markhams Pink'

Soft, romantic, and wildly charming, Clematis macropetala ‘Markham’s Pink’ bursts into bloom in early spring, covering itself in nodding, lantern-like flowers of dusky rose-pink with a fluffy, frilled center. One of the earliest clematis to flower, it brings much-needed color and movement to the garden just as winter fades. Low-maintenance, cold-hardy, and lightly fragrant, this vigorous climber thrives on trellises, fences, and arbors while also looking stunning scrambling through shrubs or cascading over rock walls.

Watering

Watering Needs:

Let dry between waterings
  • Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade; best flowering occurs with at least 4-6 hours of sunlight.
  • Soil: Prefers moist, well-draining soil rich in organic matter.
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged; mulch helps retain moisture.
  • Maintenance: Group A clematis—requires little to no pruning, just remove dead stems after flowering.  View Pruning Instructions PDF >
  • Hardiness: Hardy to USDA zones 3-8, making it ideal for colder climates.
  • Additional Tips: Perfect for naturalistic plantings, cottage gardens, or adding vertical interest. Try pairing with early spring bulbs or climbing roses for a layered display.
